“Reduces fatigue”, “prevents injury”, “improves performance”
High-performance insoles that support the soles of Olympic medalists

The arrangement of a skeleton, called “alignment,” is said to greatly influence people’s health. Even a slight distortion in balance can cause stiff shoulders, headaches, and sometimes irreparable serious injuries if allowed to continue for a long time. There are several companies working on innovative insoles that improve the function of the foot by adjusting the balance of the skeleton. BMZ, Inc. has had its Tokyo office in EGG JAPAN since 2018.

Do not underestimate it as a “mere insole.” The insoles, originally developed by the company based on the results of medical research, are manufactured for the purpose of “reducing fatigue,“ “preventing injury,” and “improving performance.” They are being evaluated by many top athletes such as golfers, soccer players, baseball players, and track-and-field athletes. In addition, Japanese national skiers and alpine snowboarders have placed a great deal of trust in the company, and many participants are purchasing its products at their own expense.

President of the company, Mr. Tsuyoshi Takahashi says, “Four of the medals won by Japanese athletes in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics were won using BMZ insoles.”

Since conventional insoles are designed with the idea of “hardening and supporting” the entire sole of the foot, they often create problems in terms of mobility. However, the insoles originally developed by BMZ achieve both stability and mobility by providing pinpoint support to the “cuboid bone” that supports the skeleton of the entire foot. The skeletal balance of the whole body will improve just by using them, and the more you use them, the more you can expect recovery of the muscle strength in your legs. Hence, it is a natural result that many athletes love them.

Mr. Takahashi became interested in insoles because of an injury he experienced during his days at high school. He was in the soccer club where he used to practice every day with spikes that did not fit his feet properly. That resulted in a serious life-threatening injury. Mr. Takahashi, who reluctantly gave up soccer and started working at a sports shop in his hometown, learned more about soccer spikes and ski boots, and soon began making insoles himself.

“If you do not stand properly, your skeleton will certainly become distorted. This is especially true when you exercise. The strength of the muscles in your legs will decrease as you apply more weight to them, and eventually, the skeleton of your feet will collapse. Exercising in such a state not only causes injury, but also makes it difficult for you to acquire the necessary sporting skills. However, the insoles we create perform the function of retaining the skeleton in its original state. With these insoles, you can improve the results of your practice, while preventing injuries,” says Mr. Takahashi.

In 2001, Mr. Takahashi started a company that manufactured custom-made insoles and tuned up ski boots, and in 2002, he began to adjust shoes and provide insoles at the request of Olympic athletes. After establishing BMZ Co., Ltd. in 2004, he has steadily accumulated achievements such as product improvements, direct supply to athletes, and accumulation of medical research results.

A major turning point for Mr. Takahashi was in 2017 when he became a member of the Tokyo 21c Club attached to EGG JAPAN.

“Since we are headquartered in Minami Town, Gunma Prefecture, it was difficult to have frequent meetings with our business partner companies due to the physical distance separating us. There were occasions where business negotiations stopped completely because of this. However, when I started visiting EGG Japan once a week as a member of the Tokyo 21c Club, I had more opportunities to meet customers and have business discussions. Being a member of the business club run by the Mitsubishi Estate has added credibility to our company and has clearly increased our opportunities to grow. Hence, we decided to move into EGG JAPAN immediately, judging that there was no better place for us if we aim for the top in the insole industry,” says Mr. Takahashi.

Mr. Takahashi regards time as the most important asset for business advancement. That is why he set up an office in EGG JAPAN, which is located right in front of Tokyo Station.

“Since the area around Tokyo Station is a business hub, companies that are much bigger than ours will have the opportunity to visit us. If we have to travel to have business discussions, we would be limited to two to three per day. However, if companies come here, we can have business talks on an hourly basis. It is also convenient that I can get here in a little over an hour from our head office in Gunma. Although I am in Tokyo for half the week now, commuting is no longer a problem. Since footwork has become lighter, I often spend half of my day in Tokyo, and the other half in Gunma,” says Mr. Takahashi.

It is often claimed that the footwear market is approximately 10 times the population. This means that there is a huge market of 1 billion pairs in Japan on its own. However, there are only a handful of companies in the world specializing in the field of insoles, which have a significant effect on the performance of shoes. Considering that, the future is certainly bright for BMZ, Inc. which has developed epoch-making products and has been steadily producing results. Mr. Takahashi talks about the future prospects as follows:

“We do not intend to monopolize the know-how of insole development. We want all our users to “run faster” and “be healthy.” Hence, we would like to collaborate with several different manufacturers in the future. We have already had talks about collaboration with a few famous shoe brands.”

It is not uncommon to see shoes of leading manufacturers of sporting goods carrying logos of other companies that supply excellent component parts such as Vibram, Continental, and Gore-Tex. In the near future, the day may come when we will see the “BMZ” logo on Nike and Adidas shoes.

He devoted himself to soccer when he was in high school and was talented enough to be elected as a prefectural representative. However, his career as a player came to an end due to an injury. After that, while working at a general sports shop in Gunma, he expanded his knowledge in ski boots, soccer spikes, and insoles. He was also involved in tune-up and development. In 2001, he opened his own store that manufactured custom-made insoles and tuned-up ski boots. In 2014, he founded BMZ Co., Ltd. The company aims to go public in 2022.

BMZ, Inc.

Founded in Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture in 2001, the company has developed an epoch-making high-performance insole by combining the feedback from top athletes with know-how cultivated in the pursuit of proper alignment for skiers. It has gained support from Japanese skiers, Japanese alpine snowboarders, professional golfers, J-League players, professional baseball players, and track-and-field athletes. Currently, the company is also developing insoles for business and casual wear. With the philosophy of “contribution to the foot – the best in the world," the company is constantly challenging and pioneering new fields.
