Athlete condition management system that
supported the great leap forward of the Japan national rugby union team

At the Rugby World Cup held in 2015, the Japan national team, which had not been able to produce results because it had a record of 1 win, 21 losses, and 2 draws until then, defeated the teams of three countries, including powerhouse South Africa, which has won the World Cup twice in the past. Euphoria Co., Ltd. is a company that played a major role in this “great leap forward,” and it is receiving increasing attention from the Japanese sports world.

The company’s “ONE TAP SPORTS” (hereinafter “One Tap Sports”) is a service that “visualizes” the exact conditions of athletes based on information entered by them on their smartphones and tablets. It has gained a reputation for helping prevent injuries as well as improve training efficiency.

The development of One Tap Sports began when a request—“We want you to create a database that visualizes the risk of injury”—was received from the Japan national team, which was trying to improve the members’ physical abilities for the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cup. The service that developed and improved this visualization database, “One Tap Rugby,” is the One Tap Sports of which Euphoria is proud.

Its characteristics are that it comprehensively collects of athletes, such as muscle tension and fatigue, and such as body temperature, pulse rate, and oxygen concentration in blood. It then analyzes them with a unique system, thereby making possible an accurate understanding of the condition of the athletes. When an athlete's body falls into a different state than usual, an alert is displayed immediately, and the coach and trainer are informed of the timing of rest and treatment.

“Injuries are part and parcel of hard practice. When it comes to the Olympics or the World Cup, top athletes head to the match with all their energy. They are not in a normal state of mind before the performance. As a result, they may be injured by practicing unreasonably while overlooking their bad condition. We have our service to prevent that from happening.”

One Tap Sports, originally created for the Japan national rugby union team, is actually used in national teams of 13 different sports and more than 30 sports in total, including parasports, such as blind soccer and elementary school teams. However, the company provides service based on only one type of product, as a rule. Needless to say, the needs to be tackled and the injuries that are likely to occur are supposed to differ depending on the type of sport and the level of the athletes. How was it possible to achieve such versatility?

“We are abstracting and generalizing user feedback to a high level and reflecting it in the service only when it is judged that it will be beneficial to other teams. Of course, in that case, we do not receive a customization fee. Because it is made simple, it has been well received for its fast processing.”

One Tap Sports has already been introduced to sports teams all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south. Euphoria has an office in EGG JAPAN in front of the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, which is a result of considering the convenience of users who come to meetings from all over Japan. When we asked Mr. Hashiguchi, the CEO, about his thoughts on actually using EGG JAPAN, he gave the following answer.

“The ceiling is high and the bright light is pouring down, making it comfortable as an office as well. There is an event space called Collaboration Space on the 10th floor, and we are holding a seminar called ‘Marunouchi Sports Lab’ there, by inviting guests who are involved in sports and business. Participants in the seminar are quite satisfied. Not only is the transportation convenient, but also the atmosphere is good. It is an important element for a venture that will be growing going forward.”

Mr. Hashiguchi says that he is facing business with the desire that “everyone involved should be happy.”

“First and foremost, I want all the players to be active without injury. However, sports involve quite a few people, including trainers, coaches, and physiotherapists. It is meaningless if these staff become exhausted for the purpose of winning the match. One Tap Sports is also a tool that streamlines the work of the people who support athletes and creates a working environment where they can shine.”

One Tap Sports is planning to support more than 20 sports in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics to be held in 2020. There is no doubt that it will play a major role in winning medals. However, Mr. Hashiguchi is looking further ahead.

“Now, 10,000 athletes, mainly top athletes, are using One Tap Sports to enter data. The data are packed with all sorts of information, including the effective amount of practice, methods of helping the body recuperate from physical fatigue, and the relationship between various data and injuries. In the future, we would like to use the data to prevent seniors from becoming bedridden and also to help children grow up without injury.”

Euphoria has created One Tap Sports, an indispensable infrastructure for the sports world. It should also be remembered that such startups are behind the success of the Japan national team at the Rugby World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics.
